Thanks to all of your efforts in sharing this post on Facebook, Twitter, etc., the thief managed to return Teajay’s camera gear and cell phone. Let that be a lesson to any aspiring thieves… don’t do it at Churchill’s and don’t mess with our local music community.
This past Friday November 22, Miami’s Deaf Poets organized a great night of music at Churchill’s Pub for their tour kick-off party. It included amazing performances by Deaf Poets, Eagle Chief, The Astrokats, Axe and the Oak, Hunters of the Alps, Jesse Jackson and more. The venue was packed and another great night was had by all at everyone’s favorite longtime home away from home. Right? Well, not exactly.
Somewhere in that crowded room, a thief was lurking. He just blended in with everyone else, but make no mistake, he was looking around for something to take that didn’t belong to him. It turned out that something that he did take belongs to Teajay Smith. If you’ve followed DigUnderRock, you have seen Teajay’s photos of many local shows over the past 2 ½ years. Teajay is a long time relentless supporter of our music community. She has been a regular contributor for this site, but has been shooting local bands in South Florida for years, long before DigUnderRock existed. She has contributed to several local blogs and media outlets and has posted thousands of photos of bands and shows on her personal and professional Facebook pages. She also promotes shows and bands every day on Facebook. Most of this, she does for free because she loves to do this, even though photography IS her livelihood. She shoots events, weddings, portraits and offers very reasonable rates for band promo shoots. This thief could have been at any bar that night… he could have been at The Stage or Will Call or Gramps or the Poor House. He could have taken anyone’s bag, their purse, their guitar or their cell phone. But he took Teajay’s bag. He took it as she took a break from taking photos to enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich from the Ms. Cheezious food truck that was parked out in front of Churchill’s that night. Her bag was sitting on top of the bar inches away from her. As she is watching the show, the thief, comes right by and snatches her bag, along with its contents – which included her wallet, her cell phone and her freakin’ camera and lenses! And he walks right out of the bar with it.
Fucked up, right? Who does this?
Well, what this douchebag doesn’t realize is that Churchill’s owner Dave Daniels installed a lot of security cameras long ago. A lot of them. I know what you’re thinking and relax… he doesn’t care that you were smoking a joint on the patio or that you were making out with your old drummer’s girlfriend in the laundry room. He does care that you think you or anyone else can come into his bar and just grab something that doesn’t belong to you and think you can get away with it.
Lucky for this thief, though, Teajay wants to give him a chance to come clean. She just wants to get her stuff back. She is holding back the video footage and close-up pictures to allow the thief to come clean and return her stuff without her pressing any charges. We are posting the least identifiable photos from the security cameras in this post. The photo above is the thief walking out of Churchill’s with the bag. The photo below, you can see Teajay in the bottom right corner while the thief (wearing cap) passes in front of her with her bag. Click on photos to enlarge.
If you are the thief and you’re reading this or if you know who this person is… Returning it to Churchill’s is fine. Walk in and hand it to a bartender or contact Teajay at firstname.lastname@example.org
