Message From Churchill’s Pub’s Nicky Bowe

If you haven’t heard yet, the news broke yesterday via Liz Tracy and New Times that Churchill’s Pub owner Dave Daniels had accepted an offer to sell the legendary venue that has hosted thousands of bands from around the world for 4 decades. An entire community was heartbroken the day before Valentine’s Day and we’ve all been sharing memories and speculating on what will become of the home away from home for so many. If you have been going to Churchill’s over the last 10 years or so, you may know Nicky Bowe. You’ve at least seen him behind the bar or standing outside in front of the venue. You may have seen him doing sound for a band while also managing the bar. You may have seen him fixing a problem with the pool table. You may have seen him dealing with someone who had too much to drink. You may have even seen him riding his motorcycle into the building. And if you’re one of the lucky 500 or so people to have been to a particular Jacuzzi Boys show, you may have seen him taking his clothes off on stage to pay up for a bet he’d lost. One thing is for sure, though… you don’t have any negative to say about the man. Nobody does.

Churchill’s was here before Nicky came on board, but he has become, along with Frank “Rat Bastard” Falestra, one of the main reasons why it is still a place that we love. And so, if Nicky makes a statement on the sale of Churchill’s, we listen.

Here is what he had to say:

“ok everyone ,yes there has been an offer made on churchills ,the right price for dave to sell ,so now the guy with the offer will have 60 days to check out all to do with the bar,and if all is good with the bar and it is still a good deal he will buy ,we all know how this works,if all goes well with the deal it will be done by early may ,i dont know who the guy is but ,dave tells me he will keep i…t as a rock&roll bar but just do things that the bar needs ,new bathrooms chef in the kitchen ,parking lot ,the things that get churchills a bad name for years ,crack heads pushing for money ,the lot ,so its not as bad as u think ,lets all see what happens ,all i can say is if it does sell  the closing partys will be crazy so crazy it will be epic ,lets wait and see” – Nicky Bowe

Review: Against Me @ Culture Room – Ft Lauderdale January 26

January 30, 2014 NEWS No Comments

Against Me! at Culture Room: Sunday, January 26th
Erin Engwall

A widely diverse group of fans gathered for Against Me’s recent show at the Culture Room. Everyone from black t-shirt clad punks, to rockabilly ladies dressed in head to toe pinup gear stood shoulder to shoulder shouting lyrics during the 20 song set.

The band furiously sped through the first three songs without pausing for breath or banter, playing as though their lives depended on it.

Laura Jane Grace brought more dimension to the stage than ever seen in past performances. She looked genuinely happy: an ear to ear grin spread across her face between each song, an ease about her presence that was not there before.

She stepped up to the microphone to introduce the fourth song in the set: “This is a song about accepting the person you are.”
The band launched into “True Trans Soul Rebel” from their recently released album, “Transgender Dysphoria Blues.”

They hit their stride mid-set, playing an amped up version of “White People For Peace.” It was followed by “I Was a Teenage Anarchist,” which Laura Jane Grace introduced fittingly as “A song about growing up in South Florida.”

As this show was the last of the tour, the crowd was treated to some fun and antics.
During the encore, opening band The Sidekicks returned to the stage to cover a few bars of Rage Against the Machine’s “Sleep Now in The Fire.” This prompted a dance party on stage right, with the members of Against Me! rocking out amid sprays of beer from shaken up cans.

The rowdy crowd took a much needed break during “Sink, Florida, Sink,” as they raised hands and pints to sway and sing the “woah oh oh” chorus. Their voices filled the stuffy room, making it even more uncomfortably steamy. No one seemed to mind too much.

I stepped outside to the patio area to get some fresh air, and glanced at the large projection screen. Everyone was jumping up and down, full tilt thrashing around. The sold out venue made it look more like a festival show than the intimate venue it is. The camaraderie among fans was something I’ve rarely seen at live shows with national acts. I had several people pull me aside to ask if I was ok, or if I was able to see the stage without difficulty. It was a welcome departure from the usual “every man for themselves” crowd, which often leaves me soaked in someone else’s spilled beer and my toes throbbing from being crushed.

Laura Jane Grace’s transition has breathed new life into this band.
The fans welcomed her with open arms. She sounded great, and exuded pure joy. It was a pleasure to see her in her element!
